The Luke Egan Memorial Fund for SULA
Luke passed away on April 7th, 2021. He was a 7th-grade history teacher at Salome Urena Leadership Academy (SULA) in Manhattan and cared deeply about the students, staff and leadership at his school. Luke’s birthday is April 24th, he would have been 36 years old.
To honor his birthday, memory, and passion for his work, Luke’s parents, Terry and Cathie, and brothers, Joe and Terry, have created The Luke Egan Memorial Fund for SULA through the Fund for Public Schools as the beneficiary of any donations made in his memory.
The SULA community has shared that Luke was one of the kindest souls, no exaggeration. He loved his students and told them often, even after school hours, on breaks, and on weekends. The lessons that he taught were priceless, and he always went beyond the textbook to make any lesson applicable to real-life for students. Students say that the best lessons he taught in history class were the ones about mental health, being kind to everyone, checking in on people often, etc. He liked working lunch duty while the students ate and would go to every single table talking to all of the kids. For many students, the free breakfast and lunch provided by the school are the only meals they have each day, and he cared about making sure they wouldn’t go hungry. He loved bonding with his students, playing football with them behind the school, taking the students on field trips, and instilling the importance of life-long education. He taught GED classes in the evening, and enjoyed connecting with older students there. The SULA staff and students miss him dearly.
Your donations will go towards areas of greatest need at SULA, such as student meals & food distribution, funding for field trips including college access field trips/pathways out of poverty, resources for social-emotional learning, and/or other areas identified in partnership with staff and Principal Rosa.
Please make your donation in the form below if you would like to support this cause.
